Heading Out For A Spot of Tea

Hey Frockers, just sharing some quick pics from a recent outing to afternoon tea at Birks. It's quite an affair. You enter the prestigious jewelry store downtown and low and behold, up a small flight of stairs on your right is a small dining room where you can enjoy some rich sandwiches, desserts and tea while overlooking a sea of diamonds. We just managed to catch the blossom trees too, which seem to only bloom about a week, two if we're lucky, every year. All in all, not a bad way to spend a Sunday.

The Golden Rule

Photos by Kyler Kelly

Sammydress frock & handbag/F21 belt & headband/vintage heels/old cardigan

To be honest, metallics aren't really my thing, unless we're talking eyeshadow of course! If you're the same, a fun way to incorporate a hits of metal into your look is with a stylish belt, pretty headband, or chic handbag. I am partial to both silver and gold tones (and lately I've been kind of obsessed with rose gold, but that's a story for another post) and in this look, adding pops of gold really add an extra element of fun to a pretty but plain nude dress. The warmth of the gold compliments the frock perfectly and if you look closely, there is no metal on my headband, only beads and sequins. But the way it adds shine and reflects light certainly does the trick! And although the belt is large and wide, the minimalistic design mimics the simplicity and elegance of the dress, and keeps it from overwhelming the outfit. I finished the look with a cream-coloured quilted handbag avec metallic strap and called it a day.

Sometimes, it's all in the accessories.

I Love Love This Dress

Photos by Kyler Kelly

F21 jacket/thrifted (Zara) dress/Le Chateau pumps/thrifted sunnies

I can't even remember when I got this darling Zara dress from that consignment store in Vancouver. It must have been 6 or 7 years ago. It has been my favourite dress for many moons. Poor thing is on its last legs! I only bring it out for special occasions nowadays for fear it will simply fall apart while I'm wearing it.

We all have those pieces...those favourite pieces, torn and tattered from years of love, the ones we refuse to retire, the ones we push on passed their prime. It's rare for me to have a piece of clothing I love so much that it fades and wears out long before I grow tired of it. It's much easier to fall out of love than to watch it disintegrate. But boy we had some good times. Riding the carousel round with past flames, strolling along el Malecon in Havana....

Some people might not get it, but fashion to me is art. It's as real and beautiful as anything in nature, on the plates in the finest restaurants, on the walls in the loveliest galleries. Whether or not fashion is your cup of tea, you all know what I'm talking about! Finding something, anything, that really speaks to you, that takes your breath away and brings you joy....well that's just sublime.

I'm Singin' The Blues

American Apparel dress/Aldo arm cuff/Zara clutch/le Chateau pumps

It's nice to rediscover old pieces you may have forgotten about or thought you didn't like anymore. Take this American Appareal number picked up at their famous warehouse sale a while ago. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the rich colour and drapey skirt! Sometimes all it really takes is leaving something untouched in the ol' closet for a while to re-appreciate it.

A Midi Moment

Photos by Kyler Kelly

Move over geographic, asymmetrical hemlines, the midi skirt is having its moment!

Forgo the mini skirts and A-liners this season and embrace the full, below-the-knee look. It has always been one of my favourite wardrobe staples. I consider it a must-have in my closet, the same way most women might think of skinny jeans or a white blouse. No doubt you Frockers know my favourite Modcloth skirt well, and the newest way to wear it is actually a nod to the olden days: with a plain sweater and simple pumps. There's something so classy, feminine and pretty about this silhouette. And if you happen to prefer a more edgy or modern take on the midi skirt, just swap out the fitted sweater for a baggy one and trade your pumps in for some high-tops. The skirt still works!

I have to say, it really warms my heart that a fashion piece I've longed admired (and will admire long after the trend fades) has finally gotten the attention it so deserves! Here's to you, midi!

In Full Bloom

 Photos by Kyler Kelly

Sammydress frock/Spring pumps/thrifted handbag

A pretty print dress is our reward for patiently enduring this long, cold winter. Say "goodbye" to double pants and "hello" to bare knees! Spring, you're like the one that got away, the one I can't stop thinking about ... and now that you're back, I'm throwing caution to the wind and letting my shoulders do the talking. I've missed you!

Holiday season = party season and if you're anything like me, you have a stunning sequin number hanging in the back of your closet that never sees the light of day. Well now's the time to whip it out! If you're hesitant to go full sequin, opt for a sweet sweater with a dash of sparkle like Debbie. And a good rule of thumb when accessorizing is to let the outfit do the twinkling by keeping the shiny jewelry and makeup to a minimum.

We're not just decking the halls...we're decking ourselves with a little bit of glam! Happy Holidays!
