The Thrift Gods Have Smiled Down On Me

Photos by Kyler Kelly

Sandals from India

We at Bouquet of Frocks love a good deal more than anything. Debbie and I love to frequent thrift stores and vintage shops, and although these hunts are very hit or miss, once in a while, we find gems worth the hours of riffling through the musty racks only to come up empty-handed.

This is one jewel I snapped up recently at one of the popular vintage shops here in Montreal. Can we first just talk about how this was totally meant to be....just look at how perfectly floor length this is on me! Trust me when I tell you that in all my 5 feet 1 inch glory, this NEVER happens. I have to hem most of my pants. I buy "capris" and wear them as regular pants. I have never seen the top shelves in my kitchen.

And I just love the flowy, retro, boho silhouette this number cuts on me. It's so unique and flattering. And we all know about my floral addiction...it was a no-brainer. I love wearing it with the sandals I picked up in India, minimal makeup and free-flowing hair, or tied in a low bun. This number has been a real no-fuss, go-to number for me this summer and the black will wear really well into the fall! Thank you, thrifting gods!

Fashion means a lot of things to me. The way I see it, the body is a canvas. It's there for me to decorate and adorn, to wipe clean and create something new the next day.

As Debbie once put so eloquently, people are never just one thing. You should never limit yourself to one idea of a person. Forget "this isn't me"... if you like it, it's you and you should rock it with confidence! Fashion to me, means self-expression and the exploration of your many alter-egos. Remember how fun it was to play dress-up when you were little? Well, it never really gets old. And I, for one, love pretending that I'm a spy at a masquerade ball, sent to seduce the French Ambassador for all his state secrets. Cause let's face it...besides Nobel Price winning mathematician, there's pretty much no scenario more ludicrous for me. Still, it's fun to pretend.

The Forecast Calls for Strong Winds & High Fashion

Sometimes you just need a wind machine to get the full effect of an ensemble. Since we're not exactly Vogue Italia, we decided to take full advantage of the gale-like winds Montreal has been experiencing lately.

The call of the seafoam maxi dress was too much to ignore. The pleated skirt turned live sculpture against the breeze, pirouetting with the apple blossoms (highlight of all highlights in May). For equal parts contrast and compliment, we paired it with a luxurious printed mini dress whose centrepiece (the cape!) practically flew skyward at every gust.

Hold onto your frocks stylites, the forecast calls for strong winds and high fashion!

Monday Funday

Photos by Kyler Kelly

This week, the fairy godmother of calendar years blessed us with the event most readily worshiped by 9 to 5ers: the three-day weekend.
J and I decided that we were not going to let anything ruin this precious celebration. (A little background: Jackie and I, partners in crime at our film subtitling job, spent the last long weekend confined to our cubicles. Tear.)
It turned out to be a perfect day starting with Dim Sum, followed by a mani-pedi delight and ending with some "light shopping."
We carped the hell out of that diem!
